良く知られているのは渡り鳥が長い距離を飛ぶ際、羽を休めることなく片目ずつで寝て、休みながら飛び続けているということです。
片目だけ寝て、片目だけ起きているなんて私たち人間からしたらとても不思議な事ですよね。
今日はそんな、片目ずつ寝る動物の「半球睡眠」について詳しく見ていきます。
ひょっとしたら、自分自身の睡眠の質を上げるヒントが隠されているかもしれません。

片目ずつ寝る「半球睡眠」とは
半球睡眠とは、脳の半分が眠り、残りの半分が覚醒している睡眠のことです。
常に周囲の安全を確認する必要のある動物や長距離を移動する渡り鳥などに見られる現象です。
半球睡眠をする動物の代表例は、イルカやクジラなどの海洋哺乳類や、アマツバメやイソシギやカモメなどの鳥類です。
半球睡眠の時は、寝ている脳の反対側の目が閉じているので、脳波を測らなくても分かるときもあります。
人間は半球睡眠できるかというと、まだ研究段階ですが、目が開いていても脳が部分的に眠る「ローカルスリープ」という現象があることがわかっています。
「ローカルスリープ」ってなに？
ローカルスリープとは、脳の一部が眠り、残りの部分が覚醒している状態のことです。
生体培養した神経細胞のネットワークや、生きた動物の脳の特定の部位で起こる現象です。
ローカルスリープは、覚醒時に活発に働いた脳の部位が休息を必要とするために起こると考えられています。
例えば、左側頭葉や左前頭葉という部位は、言語や記憶などに関係するため、覚醒時に多くの情報を処理します。
そのため、これらの部位はローカルスリープになりやすいと言われています。
ローカルスリープは、睡眠不足やストレスなどで全体的な睡眠が乱れると増加する傾向があります。
また、精神疾患や認知症などの症状とも関係している可能性があります。
ローカルスリープは、脳の機能や健康に影響を与える重要な現象です。
渡り鳥は「半球睡眠」をする代表的な動物
渡り鳥は半球睡眠をすることがあります。
半球睡眠とは、脳の半分が眠り、残りの半分が覚醒している睡眠のことです。
渡り鳥は何千キロもの長距離を飛び続けるために、半球睡眠をしながら飛ぶことができます。
半球睡眠をするときは、寝ている脳の反対側の目が閉じています。
半球睡眠をする渡り鳥の代表例は、アマツバメやイソシギやカモメなどです。
渡り鳥はどのくらいの距離を渡るのか
渡り鳥は、種類やルートによって飛行距離や飛行時間が異なります。
一般的には、渡りの距離は体重と飛行様式によって決まると言われています。
羽ばたき飛行の鳥は、体重が重いほど渡りの距離が短くなりますが、滑翔する鳥は体重に関係なく長距離を移動できます。
渡り鳥の中でも特に長い距離を飛ぶことで知られるのは、キョクアジサシです。
キョクアジサシは、南極から北極までを往復することで、一年間で約9万kmも飛ぶと言われています。
これは地球を2周分も飛んでいることになります。
一方、一度に飛行することができる最長の距離は、オオソリハシシギが記録しています。
オオソリハシシギは、一度も途中休憩を挟まずに約1,000kmも飛ぶことができます。
これは地球の1/4近くを飛んでいることに相当します。
渡り鳥はなぜ、多くの距離を移動しなければいけないの？
渡り鳥は、餌となる食糧を確保するため、気温等の環境変化に対応するため、
繁殖に適した環境に移動するためといった理由から季節に合わせて住む場所を変更しています。
渡り鳥は、春に南方から渡来して秋に再び南方に渡去する「夏鳥」、秋に北方より渡来して春に再び北方に渡去する「冬鳥」、
春と秋の一時期だけ日本を通過する「旅鳥」などに分けられます。
渡り鳥は、長い距離を移動する際に、太陽や星座や地磁気などの目印を利用して道を見つけます。
また、脳の左右を交代で眠らせることで、飛びながら休息をとることもできます。
渡り鳥は、驚くべきナビゲーション能力と体力を持っているのです。
私たち人間が目を閉じて眠る理由
人間は目を閉じて眠るのには、いくつかの理由があります。
まず、目を閉じることで、光や刺激から目を保護することができます。
光は、脳に覚醒信号を送る神経伝達物質「オレキシン」の分泌を促進します。
オレキシンが多く分泌されると、睡眠が浅くなったり、中断されたりする可能性が高くなります。
また、光は目の網膜にダメージを与えたり、目の乾燥を引き起こしたりすることもあります。
目を閉じることで、光から目を遮断し、涙液で目を潤すことができます。
次に、目を閉じることで、筋肉や神経の休養にもなります。
目は約40種類の筋肉で動かされています。
日中はさまざまな方向に動かしたり、ピントを合わせたりすることで、目の筋肉は疲労します。
目を閉じることで、目の筋肉はリラックスし、緊張がほぐれます。
また、目は脳の視覚野と密接に関係しています。
日中はさまざまなものを見て、脳は視覚情報を処理します。
目を閉じることで、視覚情報の入力が減り、脳の視覚野も休息することができます。
以上のように、人間は目を閉じて眠ることで、目や脳の保護や休養につながります。
これは生物学的な必要性や防御反応として進化した機能だと考えられています。
渡り鳥以外で半球睡眠をする動物
半球睡眠をする動物には、渡り鳥のほかにも、イルカやクジラなどの海洋哺乳類があります。
イルカやクジラは、呼吸のために定期的に水面に浮上する必要があるため、半球睡眠が便利です。
また、アシカやオットセイなどの鰭脚類も半球睡眠をすることがあります。
これらの動物は、陸と海で生活するため、環境に応じて睡眠パターンを変えることができます。
陸では全球睡眠をとり、海では半球睡眠をとることで、水中での安全を確保します。
さらに、海牛目のアマゾンマナティーも半球睡眠をすることが報告されています。
これらの水生生物は、半球睡眠中に寝ている脳の反対側の目を閉じることで、脳波を測らなくても半球睡眠をしていることが分かります。
渡り鳥以外にも目を開けて眠る動物
目を開けて眠る動物には、ほかにも以下のようなものがあります。
目を開けて眠る代表的な動物
・ヘビやヤモリなどの爬虫類は、まぶたがないために目を閉じることができません。
目の表面には鱗があり、目を保護しています。
・ワニは、危険があるときや敵が近くにいるときだけ片目だけを閉じて眠ります。
これも半球睡眠の一種と考えられています。
・魚もまぶたがないために目を閉じることができません。
魚の睡眠方法はさまざまで、泳ぎ続けるものや砂に潜るもの、水草をくわえて流されないようにするものなどがいます。
中には、自分で透明な粘液で体を覆って眠るブダイもいます。
・虫もまぶたがないために目を開けて眠っているように見えますが、実際には「休む・休憩する」という表現の方が正しいかもしれません。
虫の睡眠は人間や動物とは異なり、睡眠という概念はないと考えられています。
私たち人間も半球睡眠ができるのか
人間も半球睡眠ができるのかというと、実験的には可能だという研究があります。
例えば、左右の耳に異なる音を流しながら睡眠を誘導すると、片方の脳が覚醒状態になりやすくなるということが報告されています。
また、左右の目に異なる光を当てることでも半球睡眠を誘発できる可能性があるという研究もあります。
しかし、これらの実験は人工的な条件下で行われたものであり、自然に半球睡眠をする人間はほとんどいないと考えられます。
人間は両目を閉じて全球睡眠をすることが一般的であり、半球睡眠は人間の生活や健康に必要ではないと言えます。
